How M4A download works

An M4A file is an MP4 container holding audio only. YouTube's default audio track is AAC in that container, so AudioFetcher can copy it straight through instead of decoding and encoding again.

Most YouTube videos carry AAC at about 128 kbps. Converting that stream to 320 kbps MP3 does not add quality, it only re-encodes it. If you want the smallest file at the same quality, pick M4A or Opus instead of MP3. Free conversions cover single videos up to 60 minutes. Use only videos you own or have permission to download.

What is inside YouTube's M4A stream

Almost every YouTube video carries an AAC-LC audio track at about 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz stereo (YouTube's format 140). It is one of the two streams the YouTube player can use; the other is Opus. When you choose M4A, AudioFetcher downloads that AAC track and moves it into an .m4a file without touching the audio data, so the result is the original stream, not a copy of a copy.

The bitrate is the same for music, talks and podcasts, and no setting can raise it: a "256 kbps M4A" made from YouTube would simply be a re-encode of this 128 kbps track. To see what a file really contains, open it in the audio bitrate checker.

M4A, Opus or MP3 for YouTube audio

In short: pick M4A for Apple devices, Opus for the smallest faithful file elsewhere, and MP3 only when a device refuses the other two.

Playing M4A on iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac and in the car

• iPhone and iPad: Safari saves the file to Files > Downloads, and the Files app plays it. The Music app cannot import files from Files, so to add the song to your Apple Music library, import it on a computer (Music on a Mac, or the Apple Music app or iTunes on Windows) and sync.
• Mac: double-click to play in Music or QuickTime, or drag it into Music to add it to your library.
• Android: plays in the built-in Files app, most music players and VLC.
• Windows 10 and 11: Media Player and VLC play M4A. If it opens in the wrong app, right-click > Open with.
• Car: CarPlay and Android Auto play it from your phone. On a USB stick, many head units read AAC/M4A, but older ones only read MP3; convert those with the local M4A to MP3 tool.
• Video and audio editors: iMovie, GarageBand, Final Cut Pro and Premiere Pro import M4A directly.

Podcasts, lectures and audiobooks as M4A

M4A is a good home for long spoken audio. Under Prepare files, Embed chapters keeps the video's chapter list inside the M4A, so podcast and audiobook apps, VLC and Apple's players can jump between sections, and SponsorBlock can cut sponsor reads first. Some audiobook apps only list files ending in .m4b; that is the same container, so renaming a copy from .m4a to .m4b usually works.

Common M4A problems

• The file will not play: make sure the download finished, then see M4A will not play.
• No artwork or artist in the player: cover art embedding is an MP3 feature. Add tags to the M4A with a desktop tagger such as Mp3tag or foobar2000, or choose MP3 with cover art and tags.
• The car or an old player skips it: that device only reads MP3. Convert the file, or choose MP3 next time.
• Want it as a ringtone: use YouTube to ringtone, which exports an iPhone .m4r directly.
