YouTube to FLAC

AudioFetcher can output FLAC, but you should know what that means. YouTube's audio is lossy Opus or AAC, so a FLAC file is an exact, uncompressed copy of that source, not a lossless master. It is useful for editing and archiving without further loss, not for gaining quality.

How FLAC conversion works

The server decodes YouTube's Opus or AAC stream to PCM and stores it in FLAC, which compresses without loss. Everything that was in the YouTube stream is kept; nothing that was removed by YouTube's encoder comes back.

When FLAC is the right choice: you plan to edit, trim, normalize or remix the audio and want to avoid a second lossy encode; you keep an archive and want the closest copy to the source; your workflow standardizes on FLAC. When it is not: you just want to listen, in which case Opus or M4A gives the same quality at a fraction of the size. Free FLAC covers single videos up to 60 minutes. Questions

Is YouTube to FLAC lossless?

The FLAC step is lossless. The audio inside is still YouTube's lossy stream. Some communities reject such files as fake lossless, and they are right that no quality is gained.

Why is the FLAC file so large compared to the Opus?

Because FLAC stores the decoded audio. A 5 minute video is roughly 5 MB as Opus and 25 to 35 MB as FLAC with identical content.

Why not just keep Opus for editing?

You can. Editors that import Opus will decode it themselves. FLAC is useful when your editor or archive tool does not handle Opus.

Can I get chapters in FLAC?

FLAC does not have broadly compatible embedded chapter markers, so AudioFetcher offers Split chapters for FLAC instead.
